Posted On 09-04-2008 by Webmaster : Venus Williams takes indefinite tennis hiatus for undisclosed reason

Venus Williams Takes Indefinite Hiatus

Six-time Grand Slam champion Venus Williams will be sidelined indefinitely, though she did not say why she will be out of action.

``I've just been having some issues that I need to resolve, so I'm working on that at the moment and I'm hoping to be back playing as soon as possible,'' Williams said Tuesday at the Bausch & Lomb Championships. ``I'm not going to get any further into it, but of course I love the sport.''

Williams said last week she was dealing with a medical issue when she announced her withdrawal from the Bausch & Lomb tournament. She played last week in the Sony Ericsson Open, losing to Svetlana Kuznetsova in the quarterfinals.

Williams will not play for the United States in the Fed Cup semifinal against Russia on April 26-27, but did not rule out any other tournaments and said she still wants to play in the French Open beginning in late May.

``Of course I want to be there (in France),'' Williams said. ``I don't want to be at home watching on TV. Watching this week will be enough on TV, so hopefully not too many more weeks.''   more...

Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter is expected to sign a 10-year-deal, $150 million dollar “360” deal with Live Nation, that will include Roc Nation, a new entertainment venture for the rapper, The New York Times reports.

If the deal goes through, Jay-Z, 38, will add more than $60 million dollars in cash to his bottom line.
The rapper, who owes one more album to Def Jam, is currently on his biggest tour outing in three years, headlining the “Heart of the City” tour with Mary J. Blige, which was produced by Live Nation.

Live Nation envisions handling all aspects of Jay-Z’s entertainment, recording, tours and endorsement deals.

Under the terms of the deal, Jay-Z will receive an upfront payment of $25 million dollars, a general advance of $25 million dollars and an advance payment of $10 million dollars per album, for at least three albums.

Jay-Z will also receive a series of payments totaling about $20 million dollars for publishing, licensing and the rights to other endeavors produced by Roc Nation, as well as another $25 million dollars to target investments or acquisitions.

Finally, Live Nation will provide $5 million dollars a year to Roc Nation to support the new company’s overhead for the next five years.

Last Monday (March 31), Live Nation announced that they had signed rock legends U2 to a 12-year global contract to expand and run the band's global music enterprises including touring, merchandising, and the band's website, U2.com.

In October of 2007, the company announced a similar deal with Madonna.

Live Nation was created in 2005, when corporate giant Clear Channel Communications was split into three separate companies: Clear Channel Communications (radio), Clear Channel Outdoor (billboard advertising; outdoor display ads) and finally, Live Nation.

Disgraced former Olympic champion Marion Jones grimaces while making a statement

Marion Jones has begun her six-month sentence in federal prison for lying to investigators about using performance-enhancing drugs and her role in a check-fraud scam.

A Federal Bureau of Prison spokeswoman says the former track star turned herself in before noon Friday at Federal Medical Center Carswell, located on the Naval Air Station, Joint Reserve Base.

Jones was sentenced in January to six months of prison time and 400 hours of community service in each of the two years following her release.   more...
Posted On 01-03-2008 by Webmaster : Rapper Juvenile's Daughter Killed in Ga.

In this photo taken Feb. 29, 2008, by the Gwinnett County Detention Center, ...<br />
A 17-year-old boy has been charged with murder in the fatal shootings of his mother and her two little girls, one of whom was rap star Juvenile's 4-year-old daughter.

Anthony Tyrone Terrell Jr. was charged Friday in the deaths at the family home near Lawrenceville, where the bodies were found the night before, said police spokeswoman Illana Spellman.

She identified the victims as Gwinnett County Sheriff's Deputy Joy Deleston, 39, and her two daughters, Micaiah, 11, and Jelani, 4. The motive was still unclear.

Deleston brought a paternity lawsuit in 2004, claiming that the 32-year-old rap star Juvenile, whose real name is Terius Gray, was Jelani's father, Gwinnett County court records show.

Attorney Randy Kessler, who represented Juvenile in the proceedings, said the case was resolved peacefully by consent order in 2006. Both parties agreed Juvenile was the father.

Kessler said Saturday he had not talked with the rapper about the killings. "Anytime you have a situation like that, it's shocking," Kessler said.

Terrell was taken to jail in neighboring DeKalb County to avoid any potential conflict because Deleston worked for Gwinnett County, Spellman said. He is being held without bail.

Because of his age, prosecutors cannot seek the death penalty against Terrell. A preliminary hearing will be set next week in Gwinnett County Superior Court, said prosecutor Danny Porter.

Defense attorney Lyle Porter did not return a call Friday. An attempt to reach Juvenile at a listing for "T. Gray" in the New Orleans area, where he is based, was unsuccessful on Friday night.

Authorities on Friday found the gun used, going by information provided by Terrell. Spellman said she could not confirm whether Deleston's service weapon was used.

Deleston, a seven-year member of the department, had been assigned to the sex offender unit, police said.

Police had gone to the subdivision because a caller reported shots fired, Officer David Schiralli said earlier. They found a bullet hole in a house, then checked next door because they knew a deputy lived there.

They opened the door to announce themselves and discovered the bodies, Schiralli said. The 17-year-old son arrived at the house about 35 minutes later, he said.

Spellman said the boy was arrested after talking to investigators but didn't elaborate.

Neighbors said the family had moved in less than a year ago. They often saw Deleston in her squad car coming home from work and said having a deputy around was reassuring.

Jeff Beaird, who lives across the street, said he often saw Terrell in the driveway shooting hoops with his friends or washing his mother's patrol car but doesn't remember anything out of the ordinary.

"It's so shocking because you don't expect something like this to happen," Beaird said.

Juvenile has been arrested several times on charges ranging from failure to pay child support to resisting an officer in a scuffle at a Florida mall in 1999. Most of the charges have been dismissed.   more...
Posted On 26-02-2008 by Webmaster : Lawyer: Bush skips deposition in sports marketer's lawsuit

New Orleans Saints running back Reggie Bush watches the action from the side...

Reggie Bush failed to show up for a scheduled deposition on Monday, the latest twist in the civil lawsuit against the former Heisman Trophy winner who allegedly accepted cash and gifts from sports marketers during his sophomore and junior seasons at Southern California.

``He literally ran from his deposition,'' said Brian Watkins, the attorney for sports marketer Lloyd Lake, who is suing Bush.

Watkins said he received a fax from one of Bush's attorneys saying the New Orleans Saints' running back wouldn't be coming.

Bush's attorney, David Cornwell, declined to comment.

``I have nothing to provide for you,'' Cornwell said when reached on his cell phone.

Watkins requested that Bush bring extensive financial records, including those documenting the purchase of a car, as well as canceled rent checks for the suburban San Diego home where his parents lived and for a condo in Los Angeles.

Lake is seeking to recoup some $291,000 in cash and gifts the star running back and his family allegedly accepted from Lake and his former partner, Michael Michaels, while Bush was at USC.

Lake claims he gave Bush cash to buy a car and that Michaels allowed Bush's parents to live rent-free in a San Diego-area home. Lake and Michaels were trying to attract Bush as a client for their marketing firm, New Era.

Michaels settled with Bush in 2007.

The latest development came 13 days after Lake and Watkins walked out of a deposition after a man accompanying Cornwell opened his jacket to expose a pistol.

Watkins said Bush's lawyers are trying to keep transcripts of Bush's deposition from being given to the NCAA.

``The NCAA has asked for a copy of Reggie Bush's deposition transcripts. I told them we will definitely consider it,'' Watkins said. ``They want to prevent that from happening.''

The NCAA and Pac-10 are investigating whether Bush and his parents took improper benefits during the 2004 and 2005 seasons. Bush has not met with NCAA and Pac-10 investigators.

Bush has repeatedly denied any wrongdoing.

If Bush is found retroactively ineligible, he could lose his Heisman.

If the NCAA determines that USC violated rules, the football program could have to forfeit victories from those seasons - when the Trojans won a national championship and lost in the BCS title game against Texas - and face additional penalties.   more...
